Pocket PC Emulators Make Your PDA Your Personal, Old School, Arcade
Ron Hel-Or asked:
Gamers have long used emulators to make their home pc into their personal video arcade, but until recently pocket pc emulators have been lacking. Fortunately for the gamer in all of us, that is beginning to change. The growing popularity of PDA’s, particularly among young people, means that software vendors are paying more attention to the vast market for pocket pc emulators.
The pocket pc emulators on the market today can allow the PDA owner to emulate the Atari system, MAME, Nintendo and Game Boy among others. Game playing is an important and growing use for PDA’s, and a good emulator can make the PDA fun as well as useful.
Having your PDA act as a handheld game device greatly increases it’s versatility and usefulness. Now not only are PDA’s replacements for cell phones, digital cameras, electronic organizers and personal stereos, but they can be wonderful game devices as well.
Let’s have a look at some of the emulated software that can be found for pocket pc’s. Mind you, these are just examples representing this vast world:
1.Pocketnes – http://pocketnes.retrogames.com. This emulator is pure joy. It’s free (donation will be appreciated) and it’s downloadable instantly to your PDA – preferably iPAQ. All the platform games like classic Mario Brothers3 work well. You can also save a game level and come back later.
2.Pocket Engine – http://pocketengine.emuviews.com/ – this emulator is great. Nothing looks this good, plays this well, and has as many panels. For instance, you can run great Mahjong game, with beautiful tiles and vivid colors.
3.Mame World http://www.mameworld.net/mamece3/ – Runs more than 2,000 arcade machine ROMs including the NeoGeo games.
There are so many other emulators, and the above are just representing examples that I found to be a good starting point. These emulators will help you bring oldies like packman, space-invaders, Mario bros and other good old games “back from the dead” and resurrected right on your PDA. I think nothing beats the old games in terms of pure fun and in many cases the beauty is in the simplicity and not in high tech complicated games.
Since these games require much less computing power than the modern games, they are perfect to run on your PDA.
When shopping for a PDA, especially if it will be used as a gaming emulator, it is important to choose one that has a lot of memory, or at least a large capacity for memory expansion. It is also important to choose a PDA with a good solid processor running at a fast speed. As with desktop pcs, gaming takes up more resources than other applications, and having a fast processor and lots of memory will ensure that your gaming experience is a great one.

What is the point of the dialler function on pda’s?
Hally asked:
I have a pda and I guess that because i use it for different things I can’t see the point of some of the other things it can be used for. My pda has a bluetooth phone dialler, what is the point of this? If I use it to call someone via my phone, don’t I have to go and open my phone and activate speaker phone in order to speak to them? Or is this application useful if you already have the headset in your ear?

What Does PDA Stand For? Just What Are PDA’s Anyway?
Ron Hel-Or asked:
One of the most common questions among those shopping for PDA’s is what does PDA stand for? A PDA is also known as a personal digital assistant, and that term describes its function pretty well. A personal digital assistant is designed to help the user get more done and be able to work smarter no matter what their job. So I would say that PDA equals GMD, Where GMD stands for getting more done.
When shopping for a PDA, it helps to think about the question what does PDA stand for. A PDA should function as your assistant, helping you to get the most done with the least amount of trouble and effort.
There are many manufacturers of personal digital assistants (PDA’s). Some of the most popular models of PDA’s are the palm and the iPAQ. The palm is made by Palm One corporation and the iPAQ is made by HP. No matter what type of PDA’s you are shopping for, it is important to make sure they contain the features and specifications you are looking for.
Let’s have a quick look at the elements of a good PDA, and what you want to look at when you go out to get yourself one:
1. Maybe one of the most important elements of any PDA is its memory capacity. The memory capacity of today’s pocket pc models is much better than previous models, and increased memory means that more programs can run at the same time without degrading the performance of the pocket pc. I would say that with today’s demands of software, don’t even think of going with less that 32 MB Installed memory to start with. Of course, this can be expanded if future needs arise.
2. Another important thing to look for is a strong processor. Again, the processor chips available for today’s pocket pcs are much better and much faster than those made just a few years ago. A fast processor means that the PDA will function much more smoothly and not bog down as more programs are opened. It’s recommended you aim for the 624 MHz processor, such as the one installed on the iPAQ hx4705. If you have a modest budjet, a 312 Mhz will do OK too.
3. Battery life is another important consideration when looking at the various models of PDA’s. A PDA with a dead battery is a useless PDA, so it is important to not only choose a PDA with a long battery life, but to carry a spare battery and a good charger as well. Today’s batteries are getting better and better, as the new Lithium Ion (Li Ion) PDA batteries are becoming more popular. These batteries are made using a new technology which makes them last %40 longer that the old Nickel Cadmium batteries. They are also a lot lighter in weight. Which makes them a perfect match for a PDA. The downside to the Lithium Ion PDA batteries is that they are more expensive, but in my opinion – this is a worth while investment.
So all you have to do now is to choose a PDA that meets your need. Good luck.

Buying A Used PDA – Is That A Smart Move?
Ron Hel-Or asked:
Around 30 million PDA’s were manufactured and sold world wide by the end of 2004. This huge number guarantees a large secondary market for PDA’s, and a lot of bargains could be found among them. So if you’re considering buying A PDA that was previously owned and used by someone else, you do have a lot to choose from.
Previously used PDA’s can be divided into 2 groups : used PDA’s and rectified PDA’s. The used PDA’s have been used by another party and are sold as-is. They may work properly, and they may not. The rectified PDA is usually sold by the manufacturer, and has some kind of guaranteed-to-work warranty. Rectified PDA’s are all the PDA’s a manufacturer or a supplier can’t sell as new ones, for various reasons.
In this article we’ll discuss the used PDA option and leave the rectified PDA option for another time.
Buying a used PDA can be a good solution for anyone who wants to enjoy a PDA but doesn’t want to shell out the full price of a new PDA.
Finding a used PDA online is easy. All you need to do is go to a site like ebay.com and look for PDA’s.
Before you go choosing your PDA at ebay, remember to do a few things:
1.Understand that the items on ebay may not be presented as they really are. You don’t see the PDA with your own eyes. Remember to accept this fact, and the possibility for surprises when you get your PDA.
2.Do your won research and make up your mind as to the PDA model you want to get. DO this research before you go shopping, so you’ll have a good background about which model you want, and what are the potential problems it has. You can also ask the owner if his PDA suffers from these problems.
After you do your homework, go to ebay and start looking around. If you’re interested in a popular model, you will probably find dozens of sellers.
While you’re on ebay, try to buy form a seller who has more than 50 feedbacks Bad sellers change their ebay ID to get rid if the negative feedbacks they got, so they will have only few feedbacks.
The pro’s of buying a used PDA on ebay:
1.Some great values available – especially if you look around long enough.
2.Amazing amount of choices – dozens of sellers.
3.Extra software and accessories may be included – ask them if it does.
4.You Might be able to negotiate an even better price
The con’s of buying a used PDA on ebay:
1.Product may not be what was advertised
2.Risk of product being “Dead on Arrival”
3.Usually no warranty available
4.Risk of not receiving PDA
5.Possibly no support after sale
The advantages of buying a PDA on ebay are obvious, but the risks are notable, too. Before buying a used PDA, make sure you look at the option of buying a rectified PDA. IT will almost always cost more, but there is a chance of getting a better PDA for your money, as well as a warranty.

Tips For Using Your PDA While Traveling
Wallace Willis asked:
If you are a business man you know just how important it can be to have what you need available at all times. In the past this may not have been possible, but in todays day and age you can get what you want, when you want it. One of the best ways to do this is by using a PDA. When you rely on a PDA you will be able to take almost your entire office with you no matter where you are traveling. This sure beats having to tote around a large laptop in many cases.
Listed below are a few tips that you should follow when using your PDA during a business trip. These tips will allow you to get the most out of your PDA, even if you are not the most advanced person as far as technology is concerned.
1. Your PDA can do a lot, this is one thing that a lot of people forget. Remember, outside of being able to hold phone numbers and addresses, your PDA can also store digital documents in word, excel, PowerPoint, and any many other formats. All of this information can be found in the guide book that came with your PDA.
2. Make sure that your PDA has a fully charged battery before you decide to head out. If your battery is not charged you risk not being able to access all of your information. In order to combat this problem, you can also take a power cord with you. Some PDAs even allow you to plug them into a cigarette lighter in your car. This makes things easy on you when traveling by car.
3. If your PDA allows you to connect to the internet make sure that you take advantage of this. Why let your email pile up in the inbox while you are away? Instead, you can check it from your PDA while you are on the road. As long as you know how to use this feature you should never run into any problems.
Overall, traveling with your PDA offers many benefits. The most important thing that you can do is become familiar with your unit before you rely on it during travel. When you know what your PDA can and cannot do you give yourself the best chance of success. In the past PDAs were not available. But now that they are, you might as well take advantage of this technology.
